About
About itsabikeday.com
A free, regional cycling-conditions utility for mid-Atlantic commuters, road cyclists, e-bike riders, and bike-share tourists. Answers one question for each route and city: is today a bike day?
Why it exists
Strava, Ride with GPS, and Komoot are good at planning a route and tracking your ride. Generic weather apps tell you wind speed, but not whether that wind is a tailwind or headwind for the actual line you're riding. Itsabikeday answers a different question: should I ride today, on this specific route? using today's weather, wind direction relative to each segment of the route, pavement state, air quality, and active alerts.
What it is
- Static, free, ad-free.
- No reviews, no social feed, no GPS navigation.
- Live data from NWS, AirNow, OpenStreetMap, and NOAA solar calculations.
- Wind-relative-to-route scoring computed from each route's polyline.
- Four cycling activities — commuters, road cyclists, e-bikers, and bike-share tourists — each with its own comfort zones and sensitivities.
- Every named
route=bicyclerelation in OpenStreetMap that crosses our region. Route descriptions are sourced from Wikipedia article extracts where the OSM relation is wikipedia-tagged, from OSMdescriptiontags otherwise, and from a structured fact summary as a final fallback.
What it isn't
- Not a route planner. Ride with GPS, Komoot, and Strava do routing better.
- Not a fitness tracker. Use Strava for that.
- Not a gear store. No affiliate links in editorial content.
- Not a bike-share booking tool — for that, use the operator's own app.
