Indian Head Rail Trail

12.9 mi Out-and-back 131 ft gain

The Indian Head Rail Trail is a 13.1-mile (21.1 km), shared-use rail trail that runs from Indian Head, Maryland, to White Plains, Maryland. It was built on the abandoned right-of-way of the old Cape Charles Railroad, a subsidiary of the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad (NYP&N), which ran from 1910 to 1972. Planned phases would extend the trail all the way to Cape Charles.

Thunderstorms in the forecast — lightning and cyclists are a bad combination.

  • Thunderstorms — lightning and cyclists do not mix — get off the road before they arrive.
  • Pavement: wet — wet during the likely ride window — reduced braking, road spray, limited visibility to drivers.
  • 72°F air — right in road cycling's sweet spot
  • Headwind on this route — 12 mph headwind outbound — expect a 12 mph headwind on the return.
