The Old PA Pike Trail

8.4 mi Out-and-back 1024 ft gain

The Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike is the common name of a 13-mile (21 km) stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike that was replaced in 1968 by a new stretch. This was done to eliminate traffic congestion caused by the two-lane Sideling Hill Tunnel and Rays Hill Tunnel. Due to this the Cove Valley travel plaza was demolished. The 1968 alignment is east of the heavily congested Breezewood interchange for Interstate 70 (I-70) eastbound at what is now I-76 exit 161. This was replaced two years after that alignment opened.

Thunderstorms in the forecast — lightning and cyclists are a bad combination.

  • Thunderstorms — lightning and cyclists do not mix — get off the road before they arrive.
  • Pavement: wet — wet during the likely ride window — reduced braking, road spray, limited visibility to drivers.
  • NWS alert active — check the alert before rolling out.
  • 29 mph wind — strong — plan for slow outbound if wind is against you.
  • Headwind on this route — 29 mph headwind outbound — expect a 29 mph headwind on the return.
