Four styles of riding, each with its own comfort zones, surface sensitivity, and wind tolerance. The score engine weighs factors differently depending on who's riding.
-
Bike commuting
195 routes · ideal 50–75°FDaily utility cycling — work, errands, school drop-off. Commuters are experienced in their corridors and weather-flex, but they care about arriving presentable and safe in traffic. Morning and evening light matter more than midday. Short-radius trips, so heat and heavy rain are quit conditions more than elevation.
-
Road cycling
464 routes · ideal 48–72°FFitness- and distance-oriented cycling on paved surfaces. Road cyclists go long, so wind over a multi-hour ride matters more, and a tailwind-out / headwind-back route is miserable. Temperature comfort is wider at the cold end (they're dressed for it) and narrower at the hot end (sustained effort in heat is rough).
-
E-bike riding
464 routes · ideal 45–82°FPedal-assist or throttle-assist e-bikes. Range is weather-sensitive — lithium-ion batteries lose 20-30% of capacity below 40°F. Riders travel faster than analog commuters (and experience more wind chill accordingly). Heavier bikes make heavy rain handling marginal.
-
Bike-share touring
195 routes · ideal 55–85°FTourists and occasional riders on Capital Bikeshare, Lime, Bird, or similar. Typically slower, shorter distances, fair-weather rides on bike paths and protected lanes. Usually no rain gear, so even light rain ends the ride. Heat is manageable at low intensity.
